WhatsApp photos taking space on iPhone? Fix it

WhatsApp can keep one copy in the app and another in Photos. Turn off Save to Photos, clear WhatsApp storage, then clean the copies already in your library.

WhatsApp can store the same photo twice: once inside the app, and once in your photo library if Save to Photos is on. To stop the pile from growing, turn off Save to Photos in WhatsApp › Settings › Chats. To free space inside WhatsApp, use Settings › Storage and Data › Manage Storage. The copies already in Photos need a separate cleanup.

Step 1: stop saving new media to Photos

  1. Open WhatsApp › Settings › Chats.
  2. Turn off Save to Photos.

This does not delete anything. For a single busy group, you can also open the chat’s info and set Save to Photos to Never for that chat only.

Step 2: clean what WhatsApp keeps inside the app

Open WhatsApp › Settings › Storage and Data › Manage Storage. You see the largest files and the chats that take the most space, and you can delete forwarded files and large media from there. This frees the space WhatsApp uses on its own.

Step 3: clean the copies already in Photos

This is the hard part by hand. Photos cannot filter by the app a photo came from, so WhatsApp images sit between your own photos, month after month. Deleting them from Photos does not affect the chats.

What does DustFox do differently?

Sent to You separates received media from your own photos. It recognises the source from the file name: WhatsApp saves images with names like IMG-20240115-WA0012.jpg, and Telegram, Instagram and other apps leave their own traces. You can filter by app and by month, and when the same image came in from several chats, Select extras picks the repeated copies and keeps the largest.

If an app saved an image under a generic name, the source cannot be known, and DustFox leaves it out rather than guess. It also works only on your photo library: media that stays inside WhatsApp is managed from WhatsApp’s own storage screen.

Questions and answers

If I delete a WhatsApp image from Photos, does it disappear from the chat?

No. The copy in your photo library and the copy inside WhatsApp are separate. Deleting one does not delete the other.

Does turning off Save to Photos remove images already saved?

No. It only stops new ones from being saved. Images already in your library stay until you delete them.

Does the same apply to Telegram?

Telegram has a similar setting that saves incoming media to Photos, and its own storage usage screen for media kept inside the app.
