Free up iPhone space without deleting photos
Keep every photo and still get space back. Let iCloud hold the originals, shrink videos with HEVC, drop unused Live Photo motion and clear what is not a photo.
Storage
In Photos, open Collections, tap Recently Deleted under Utilities, unlock it and delete. Steps for iOS 26 and iOS 18, plus what to check before you empty it.

To empty Recently Deleted, open Photos, tap Collections, then Recently Deleted under Utilities. Tap View Album, unlock it with Face ID or your passcode, and delete the items. The space comes back right away. Until you do, deleted photos and videos keep taking space for 30 days.
The Photos app on iOS 18 is a single scrolling screen. Scroll down below your library until you reach Utilities, tap Recently Deleted, unlock it and delete as above.
In the same album, tap Select, pick the items you want back, tap the More button (•••) and choose Recover. They return to your library with their original dates.
DustFox cannot empty the album itself: Apple’s photo framework gives apps no access to it. So its Empty button shows these steps, then opens Photos. When you come back, DustFox measures free space again and confirms that the space returned.
Yes. Photos removed from Recently Deleted cannot be recovered in Photos. If you use iCloud Photos, they are removed from iCloud and your other devices too.
Since iOS 16, the Hidden and Recently Deleted albums are locked by default and open with Face ID, Touch ID or your passcode. You can change this in the Photos settings.
Apple's photo framework does not give apps access to that album, and there is no link that opens Photos inside it. DustFox shows the steps and opens Photos instead.
Free to download. Everything runs on your device, and Pro is yours once or by the year.

iCloud storage and iPhone storage are two different things. Buying more iCloud does not add space to the phone. Here is what does, and what iCloud actually changes.
