Is 128 GB or 256 GB enough on iPhone?

Work out the right iPhone storage from the phone you already have. How to read your current use, what grows fastest, and when 128 GB, 256 GB or more makes sense.

Short answer: The best guide is the phone you already have. Open Settings › General › iPhone Storage, note how much you use today, and add what you expect to add over the years you will keep the new phone. If you keep your photos in iCloud with Optimize iPhone Storage, 128 GB can still work. If you keep everything on the phone, record 4K video or keep large offline downloads, 256 GB is the realistic starting point, and 512 GB or more is for people who film a lot.

What the current iPhones start at

Since the iPhone 17 line, Apple’s current models start at 256 GB: iPhone 17, iPhone Air, iPhone 17 Pro and the iPhone 17e. The iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max come in 256 GB, 512 GB, 1 TB and 2 TB. A 128 GB phone today is usually an older or second-hand model.

Read your current phone first

In iPhone Storage, the bar at the top shows how your space is split. Three rows tell you most of what you need:

  • Photos: the size of the library stored on this phone. With Optimize iPhone Storage on, this is much smaller than the library in iCloud.
  • Apps: the biggest apps and their data, including chat apps that keep their own copies of every photo and video you receive.
  • iOS and System Data: space you cannot use, which the new phone will need too.

Take your current total, add a margin for the next two or three years, and leave room free: an almost full phone updates slowly and records less.

What makes a library grow fastest

  • Video resolution: 4K at 60 fps fills space many times faster than 1080p at 30 fps. Settings › Camera › Record Video shows roughly how much a minute takes.
  • ProRes and ProRAW on Pro models: ProRes can be up to 30 times larger than HEVC, and a 48 MP ProRAW photo is around 75 MB.
  • Chat apps: WhatsApp and similar apps can save every received image to Photos while keeping their own copy too.
  • Live Photos: each one carries a short video next to the still.

When a smaller phone is fine

If you already use iCloud Photos with Optimize iPhone Storage, most of your library lives in the cloud and the phone keeps only small versions. Then the question is how much iCloud you need, not how much phone. The difference is easy to miss: iPhone storage full even though you pay for iCloud.

What does DustFox do differently?

If you are keeping your current phone for a while longer, DustFox helps it last. Tell it how much space you need, for example 5 GB, and it builds a plan with the least regret: exact copies and burst extras first, then old screenshots, lossless conversions last. It shows the numbers for your own library before you delete anything, all on the device, with no account.

Questions and answers

Can I add storage to an iPhone later?

No. iPhone storage is fixed when you buy it and there is no memory card slot. External drives and iCloud can hold files and photos, but they do not add storage to the phone itself.

How much space does iOS itself take?

It depends on the model and version. Look at the iOS and System Data rows at the bottom of Settings › General › iPhone Storage on your current phone, and count on the next version taking about as much.

Does Apple Intelligence need storage?

Yes. Apple says Apple Intelligence on iOS 27 needs up to 8 GB of storage, and up to 14 GB on iPhone 17 Pro, iPhone 17 Pro Max and iPhone Air.

Is 128 GB still enough in 2026?

For someone who keeps most photos in iCloud, records little 4K video and uses a handful of apps, yes. Current iPhone models start at 256 GB, so 128 GB mostly means an older or used phone.
