Blurry Shots: photos that aren't sharp

The shot taken while walking, the one where the camera focused on the background. DustFox finds the frames you would never print.

A soft, out-of-focus photo beside a sharp one

How does DustFox find blurry photos?

It measures sharpness with Laplacian variance: how strongly the brightness changes at edges. A crisp photo has sharp edges and a high score; an out-of-focus or shaken one has soft edges and a low score. The measurement runs on a 160-pixel grayscale copy of each photo, on the device.

Why is the threshold cautious?

Because deleting a good photo is worse than keeping a bad one. The cut-off was set so that sharp photos do not land in the list, at the cost of letting a few soft ones through.

Should I delete everything it finds?

Look first. Some blur is intentional: motion at a concert, a night scene, a child who would not stand still. The list is a shortlist, not a verdict. Everything deleted waits 30 days in Recently Deleted.

How is this different from choosing a keeper among duplicates?

Among duplicates, DustFox compares shots of the same scene with each other and measures the sharpest region of each frame, so a portrait with a soft background still wins. Blurry Shots asks a simpler question about each photo on its own.

Questions about Blurry Shots

Will sharp photos end up in the list?

The threshold is deliberately cautious so that sharp photos stay out, which means a few soft ones may be missed. Review the list anyway; blur is sometimes intentional.

How is sharpness measured?

With Laplacian variance, a standard measure of how crisp the edges in an image are, computed on a small grayscale copy of each photo on the device.

Does it check photos in iCloud?

It checks photos whose original is on the device, because it has to read the photo itself.
